The Oriki collective, centered around the musicians Yann Salètes, Mourad Baïtiche, and Michel Teyssier, has been working for 20 years in various musical constellations between France and Morocco, Algeria, Botswana, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Ivory Coast.
Their new musical project is dedicated to the work of the legendary Senegalese director Djibril Diop Mambéty. Together with the Senegalese singer Woz Kaly (Touré Kunda, Youssou N’Dour, Mokhtar Samba, Etienne Mbapé, among others), they present Mambéty’s masterpiece LE FRANC in a new musical guise.
Mambéty’s films are inextricably linked with Dakar. In LE FRANC, Marigo – a musician – wants his instrument back that has been confiscated by his spiteful landlady due to rent debts. When it turns out that Marigo has won the lottery but has stuck the lottery ticket too firmly to his front door, he lifts it off its hinges and carries it, along with the ticket, through the hustle and bustle of Dakar to the state lottery counter – a journey with obstacles…
